PHYSICALLY INTEGRATED DANCE
SUMMER INTENSIVE
August 3 – 10, 2008

AXIS Dance Company is hosting it’s 3rd Summer Intensive August 3 – 10, 2008 at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, Oakland, CA.  AXIS and Eric Kupers of the CSUEB Dance Department will teach physically integrated contact improvisation, technique, choreography, performance, as well as site-specific dance.  The intensive will culminate with an informal performance by workshop attendees and faculty.

People ages 18 and up, of all dance levels and experience, with and without physical disabilities are invited to attend. All participants will be selected through an application process. Please download and send a completed application form AND resume or curriculum vitae of dance, theater, and/or athletic experience to the AXIS office at 1428 Alice Street, Ste. 200, Oakland, CA 94612 by the postmark deadline of June 15th.

Tuition for the workshop is $500. Limited full and partial scholarships will be made available. To apply for a full or partial scholarship participants should submit a letter of interest including a statement of financial need to accompany their application.

Tuition does not include the cost of accommodations. AXIS is reserving a block of hotel rooms in Oakland at a competitive room rate. We will make hotel information available to workshop registrants in early July. AXIS will make every effort to assist people in finding affordable accommodations including providing registrants with contact information of others who may wish to share a room for the length of the summer intensive.

Dance Writing and Criticism Opportunity, UK March 21, 2008

Calling aspiring dance critics interested in study at Master’s level. The University of Chichester is running a Master’s module in Dance Writing and Criticism at Sadler’s Wells on selected Friday evenings between April and July, and during the day on some Saturdays in Chichester.  If you are interested, why not book a place on the introductory evening at Sadler’s Wells on Friday 4 April at 7pm?

DVD: In the Moment December 23, 2007

A DVD about the arts and people with profound and multiple disabilities directed by Steve Shaw of Paddington Arts and produced by Mencap. The DVD looks at four companies who demonstrate some of the most exciting practice in the arts with people with profound and multiple learning disabilities: Oily Cart, Project Artworks, Soundabout and the Unlimited Company. In the Moment covers important considerations in terms of communication and practice. It is intended to inspire those responsible for services to look again at the creative processes they can make available that might enrich people’s lives. And we hope it will inspire more artists and organisations to become involved in this exciting area of work.

High Time: Leadership from a disability perspective
Hosted by the Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP) and DALI (Disability Action Learning Initiative), High Time is an open dialogue for emerging and current disabled leaders within the creative and cultural sectors. Confirmed speakers are Dame Jane Campbell, Government Independent Living Review Panel; and Alison Walsh, Channel 4. Plus an open mic with other disabled leaders from the sector, a presentation or two and an opportunity to debate leadership issues from a disability perspective. This event will bring together key disabled leaders to discuss, explore and identify effective action to be taken in leadership.

Leading Dance with Older People Course

A Freedom in Dance course housed by lincolnshire dance

This inspiring course is designed for dance artists with an interest
in working with older people and health and community staff who wish
to extend their work with older people by integrating dance into
their practice.

With a focus on a peopled-centred approach, students will strengthen
their skills to enable them to provide creative, accessible workshops
and to encourage a sense of well-being within group members.

The course provides students with in-depth knowledge of the ageing
process and health and safety issues when working with older people,
as well as considering the benefits of particular dance activities.

Specialist practitioners provide high quality taught sessions two
days per month, incorporating both practical and theoretical
elements. Each candidate will undertake at least one placement either
in a residential home, or with active older people of 50 years plus.
The placement will be unpaid for at least 10 weeks. Additional
activities will require an average of 8 hours a week.

In 2008 there will be 2 courses:
• April-November : Rochdale (Hosted by Spiral Dance)
• October-April : Wellingore, Lincolnshire.

Arts and Disability website launched, Northern Ireland December 6, 2007

International Day of Disabled People (Monday 3rd December) marked the launch of www.artsanddisability.com. “This first all-Ireland website contains information, resources and facts about Arts and Disability and was initiated by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Arts Council/An Chomhairle Ealaíon. The site is designed to be of practical use to anyone with an interest in arts and disability in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. It showcases information for disabled artists, disability organisations, arts organizations and arts workers. In addition it will be useful for parents, families, advice workers and the wider community. www.artsanddisability.com includes a searchable directory and information about terminology and attitudes, legislation, improving access, disability equality training, support and funding.

Call for Papers: Conference for Creative Economy in Canada Deadline – December 7 The conference Board of Canada and The Department of Canadian Heritage, Government of Canada, are pleased to announce a Call for Papers for the International Forum on Creative Economy. Papers are welcome in either of Canada’s official languages, French or English. What are the Dance Leaders Courses?

The courses aim to provide and develop the knowledge and understanding of the skills and issues required for working in the community. They will be beneficial for both starting and established practitioners as they also offer the opportunity to brush up on skills, reinvigorate practice, and network with others.

 
Who are the courses for?

For anyone who wishes to develop their dance leadership skills. The courses are for dance practitioners including artists, youth/community workers, recent graduates and teachers.

 What will I learn?

Each level guarantees 20 hours of workshop time including active participation, group activities, discussions, observations and workshops.

 
Foundation Level: (December 2007)

Practical classes; dance with older people, early years, young people and disabled people; heath and safety; equality and diversity; working for yourself.

 
Development Level: (April 2008)

Practical classes; dance in challenging environments; planning, managing projects and evaluation; health and wellbeing; working collaboratively; teaching technique.

 

What will I gain from the courses?

 Both courses are certificated.

 You will acquire the practical knowledge and skills necessary to work safely and confidently in a range of community settings.

 Certificated completion of the courses will also provide evidence to potential employers of your professional competence and awareness of relevant issues.
